unNiched 2010, an event that will launch online at the end of the month, will be what its promoters say is the first time health marketers will use crowdsourcing to develop health-marketingcommunications campaigns for a non-profit organization - the Lung Cancer Alliance - in a systematic and measurable way. Participating in the event are the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Edelman and Johnson & Johnson. The event, which will also convene in person in Manhattan November 1-2, is produced by healthcare-communications marketing agency Enspecktos.

During the live portion of unNiched 2010, attendees will participate in a two-day idea competition called unThink, where they will work together in small teams and develop a series of strategic blueprints for an educational campaign.

Crowdsourcing - a concept increasingly applied in the marketing and entertainment industries - is slowly making its way to unrelated sectors such as health. The Trentonian recently sponsored a crowdsourcing initiative to reach out to the community for insight and information about Trenton’s teen obesity problem. (via the Trentonian).

Crowdsourcing is also being used in humanitarian health-related endeavors, News Day reports. Crowdsourcing took place on an unprecedented scale after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, it said: “communities were able to report their needs while accurate street maps were created for humanitarians and search and rescue teams tried to save lives.”
